Why We Joined
Our founder, Luis (Antonio) Del Rio, explained it this way in the announcement:
“I lost a close friend to cancer when he was 17. Before he passed, he wanted to start a nonprofit to help people going through cancer, especially kids and teenagers, and he asked me to be part of it. After he died, everyone got pulled in different directions and it never came together. I have carried that with me ever since. Partnering with Cleaning for a Reason is how I finally get to do the thing he asked me to do. A clean home is not a luxury during treatment—it lowers infection risk, lowers stress, and gives a family room to breathe. If we can take one real weight off someone’s shoulders during the hardest stretch of their life, that is work worth doing.”
What We’re Committing To
Each month, we provide up to two San Diego County cancer patients with two consecutive months of free home cleaning. That is a real cleaning by our trained, background-checked team — the same service a paying client receives, following the same written checklist.
There is no cost, no obligation, and no catch.
Who Qualifies
Cleaning For A Reason serves cancer patients regardless of age, gender, cancer type, or income. You may qualify if you are:
- Currently undergoing cancer treatment
- Recovering from cancer-related surgery
- In hospice care
There is no income requirement. Nobody is asked to prove financial need.
How to Nominate Someone
Anyone can nominate a patient — the patient themselves, a spouse, an adult child, a friend, a neighbor, an oncology nurse, or a social worker. The application takes about five minutes.

For Oncology Practices and Support Teams
If you work at a San Diego oncology practice, infusion center, cancer support organization, or hospice program, we can provide printed nomination flyers for your waiting room and help your staff refer patients directly. Call us and we will bring them by.
Why a Clean Home Matters During Treatment
This is not only about comfort. Cancer treatment frequently suppresses the immune system, which makes ordinary household bacteria, mold, and dust a genuine infection risk rather than an annoyance. At the same time, fatigue makes normal upkeep close to impossible.
The result is a home that gets steadily harder to manage at exactly the moment a family has the least capacity to manage it. Removing that one burden gives people room to focus on treatment and recovery.
